LEAGUE GAME

V SEATON (AWAY) SUNDAY 11/3/2007

WON 4-12

A good, solid team effort enabled Maryport to get their league campaign started with a win against a very resilient Seaton side.

Early Maryport defensive pressure meant that Seaton often had to kick from deep inside their own half into a very strong wind, which disabled both teams' efforts to play expansive rugby.

Maryports first try was a result of strong forward play from the likes of Jordan Tinkler, Sam Slinger and Daniel Fidler getting good field position, and excellent hands by the right hand side attack enabled winger Reece Alderson to dive in at the corner. The conditions were not ideal for goalkickers and loose forward Craig Foster missed with his touchline conversion attempt. 0-4 to Maryport.

The Port's second try was almost a carbon copy of their first, this time on the left hand side with centre Tom Ross touching down. Again, Foster had a difficult task with the conversion which was missed. 0-8 Maryport.

Substitute Jack Dawson was the next to cross, evading 3 would be tacklers straight from a scrum to cross in the corner with his first touch of the ball. The conversion was missed and Maryport had a 12 point lead at the break.

Seaton came out determined in the 2nd half and were led well by their 2nd rower Quaill, with Maryport having to scramble defend well, in particular Craig Foster, Nathan Kirkbride & Ellis Nixon to keep the Seaton attack out.

The village side however got rewards for their efforts when, after having a couple of repeat sets due to a couple of Maryport errors, good handling enabled 2nd row Carl Stephenson to cross wide out. The Seaton kicker had the same problem as Maryport found, with kicking conditions almost impossible and the attempt was unsuccessful.4-12 to Maryport which is how it stayed.

Maryport were perhaps slightly the better side in this hard fought, but never dirty, match. Both sides will surely be hoping for a Top Four place at the end of the season on this showing.

Bad news from the game is centre Tom Ross will be out for approximately 6 weeks after damaging his shoulder in the act of scoring his try.

Next week, Maryport have a derby game away at Glasson in the league, as they have a bye in the BARLA Cumbria Cup First Round.

LEAGUE GAME

V EGREMONT (A) SUNDAY 8/4/2007

LOST 36-22

EGREMONT Rangers took first blood in this battle of the top two that are both favourites to finish in the medals at the end of the season, with this emphatic victory at Gillfoot Park, but the visitors made them fight all the way to the end.

Egremont were applying the pressure and in the fifth minute, prop forward Scott Atkinson barged over under the black dot. Stand-off James McDonald added the conversion to put Egremont 6-0 in front.

Then Maryport winger Reece Alderson raced away from the Egremont defence for a 50-metre try and with full back Matthew Mossom banging over the conversion, the game was all square at 6-6.

Five minutes later the home side were back in front when Gregg Stainton scored a magnificent solo try from his own 20-metre zone, giving Egremont a four-point lead.

But Maryport bounced back to take a half-time lead when second-rower Ellis Nixon collected a cross field kick by stand-off Sam Forrester, to touch down in the corner – loose forward Craig Foster converting from the touchline and Maryport led 12-10 at the break.

The second half was only two minutes old when Maryport increased their lead when stand-off Forrester touched down after a good passing movement with his loose forward Foster, who added the extras to give the visitors an 18-10 lead. Egremont responded immediately, winning the ball back straight from the kick-off, before feeding Stainton who raced in to touch down in the corner.

Stainton was proving unstoppable for Rangers and he raced 80 metres to record his hat-trick - McDonald adding the goal and Egremont were now in front 20-18. The home side were putting the visitors under tremendous pressure and five minutes later prop Atkinson collected his second try for McDonald to add the extras.

Five minutes later the hard working Atkinson collected his hat-trick after a good break by his prop partner, and with McDonald booting the conversion, Egremont were ahead 32-18.

Maryport refused to throw in the towel and Foster blasted onto a superb pass from Forrester to touch down out wide, sand put Maryport just 10 points behind but Rangers put the game virtually out of Maryport’s reach when centre Jarrod Stewart touched down for the final score in a great game.
